And I might do a video dedicated to the actual historical objects that appear in the games. Unfortunately, I currently have no time to make videos but I will get back to it eventually.

    Lol. Something tells me you'd enjoy Guilliman from Warhammer 40k because he's very Roman and is the close you get to a lawful good character, which is a breath of fresh for a Roman-eqsue faction. I even made my own character who is kinda like Caesar mainly because I love leaving in history elements and I just love history.

    I know I made another comment before but have to ask you something that I find odd or at least how did it come about: is it true Rome saw any or everyone as Barbarians or is it like with the ignorant smug British where it’s a stereotype or really overblown?

    • @LidaLiberopoulou
      @LidaLiberopoulou Місяць тому

      No, Romans did not consider all foreigners as barbarians or rather they tended to be more flexible than the Greeks. The term for the Romans was connected more to the relation of the foreigners to them and wasn't necessarily based on their idea of being superior to everyone else (which was how Greeks used it). Eg they would consider Persians and Carthaginians barbarians. But that was because they posed an existential threat to Rome, otherwise, they were fully aware of how old and sophisticated both these cultures were. On the other hand, a Roman would not consider a Romanised gaul as a barbarian. They were still foreigners but the fact that they kept Roman customs and law put them outside that category

      Well the Roman Empire didn't last 500 years (or over 1900 if you throw in the Republic and Eastern Roman empire) by being snooty assholes to everyone they met. They could be crass and very brutal especially if you crossed them. But they were the first empire to offer citizenship to allies and the people they conquered making them stakeholders to their empire at least to some level.

      @@LidaLiberopoulou I mean it's better than what the Greeks had in mind about citizenship where they thought men were so unequal that so few would earn it and at others some Romans thought it would delude the concept of citizenship because people get to own public property. Rome and the Greek States were similar, but they went about those traits for different reasons.

And conviniently had rockets ready to shoot down the nukes in the new vegas area. So him knowing makes sense. Also form the conversation i had with him, he had no interest in saving anyone except himself. Hmm... even if that is the case it would probably form a thin shell that would have already crumbled and collapsed in places after the flesh inside it would have decomposed. Cant see how this would have turned the entire human form into solid stone/baked sand. In any case as i mention in the video it is just a minor point. The Fallout franchise in general is not the most realistic when it comes to physics and chemistry. But it still looks a bit silly.

    One aspect about the APT games that "bug" me because it breaks immersion (but is understandable): The language used for the dialogue is modern, contemporary English and not an English slang of that time. One example is the word "f*ck", which is used in the dialogue for cussing, but as far as I know in the 14th century this word was unknown as a cuss word but slowly made its way into the language one or two centuries later.

    • @LidaLiberopoulou
      @LidaLiberopoulou 3 місяці тому

      Yeah, to be honest, I avoid going into the historical accuracy of the dialogue of APT and history games in general because there are very few games out there that even try to make the interactions between characters even remotely historically accurate (e.g. would a petty nobility character ever address and upper clergy or royal family member in the way we see in games, wouldn't you expect them to mention god and divine Providence more often?) The only game i have played so far that takes historically accurate dialogue a bit more seriously is Pentiment but even that can't go full 16th century for obvious reasons.

      I have no problem with fantasy elements in games. The problem is when they associate these fantasy elements with actual historical objects. The antikythira mechanism is a actual historical object with very specific history and function. And this is even more annoying when it comes from a game series that claims to be heavily based on history and even has aspirations of becoming history education material. They could have just invented a object and used it as MacGuffin for their story without loading all this nonsense on a existing and well known historical object

    Hey Lida! What an excellent video! You've really spotted everything we laid down and it's awesome watching you go in great details, even scouring the website and blog to reinforce your first impressions! Thank you! To address some of your concerns; the OST will have key moments where there is singing and poetry, it won't be like that the entire game. There's a lot of instrumental background music most of the game. Like you said, it would definitely get too distracting and maybe a bit obnoxious if there was fervent singing throughout the entire game hehe. 😅 When it comes to the stories themselves, you really hit the nail on the head; "this focus on the source material can add some big challenges to its design". LotRT is a game and the player is free to approach the adventures how they see fit, which presents a great challenge for us as game designers. How can we stay 100% true to a written story while giving the player any choice at all? That's of course impossible. We adapted the stories while drawing inspiration from the real ones (you spotted the loathly lady!). Depending on how the player chooses to act, which knights you choose to send on a quest, etc.. there will be differences from the source material. We chose to adopt certain themes while giving creativity to the player to make decisions. It's a non linear game; part adventure, part RPG. Regarding the patronage of Eleanor of Aquitaine, it is true that several historians have recently questioned the extent of her involvement. There has been a kind of swing back on this issue in the past decade. What we know from Layamon in the 13th century is that the Brut was dedicated to Eleanor. Between the dedication and the commission, there is only a small step that some (like us) may have taken, perhaps out of excess enthusiasm. Nevertheless, like you said, there is a consensus among historians that Eleanor did play an active role in the dissemination of the Arthurian legend. You make a good point though that we do take into account! We'll note the necessary nuance on the blog post as soon as possible. :) Thank you once again for the interest you're showing in LotRT and without spoiling too much, yes, we do have a lot more coming soon that will help our new fans better understand the game.

      Thank you! It was really fun to make. Your blog post about "Narration, Music and Song" gave me the impression that sung narration will be the main way of conveying the story to the player. It is good to know that this is something that will occur only in specific parts of the game. As for the player choices within an established story, I'm curious to see exactly how you have handled the balance between the original material and the adaptations that are necessary to facilitate player freedom. As I mentioned in the video I find interesting the idea of these established stories having completely different outcomes. Again thanks for informing me about your game and the announcement trailer, I hope you will have more to show about it soon!

    a fun detail I can actually contribute (thanks to having studied the book in question) is that Andreas can quote another Christian mystic's work, the book of Margery Kempe. Basically, if Andreas kept that French heretical book the game grants him the Mystical Spirit feature after the first time skip, stating in his journal entry that Andreas has spent the intervening years reading up on some of these more obscure, potentially heretical works of Christianity (its actually the only instance of a decision in the game doing this as far as I can tell, aside from deciding which book to get Magdalene - its a shame because I think its very neat and in a larger version of this game I can totally see a lot of fun outcomes to be generated from such instances, but it largely goes beyond the scope of the story the game is telling). Dialogue options for this feature are quite rare, but identifiable by the golden blazing sun symbol next to them, and the most notable is in an exchange with Sister Amalie where Andreas quotes a passage describing a desire to love christ as a wedded husband - I cannot say with utmost confidence that its directly referencing Margery Kempe without double-checking both it and the dialogue interaction in-game, but that is the impression I received and the streamer LudoHistory appeared to have the same impression in his stream of the game - it certainly aligns quite closely with Kempe, who directly claimed to have married Jesus through an ecstatic vision and is another figure who is quite similar to Sister Amalie, particularly in that she was also illiterate and had to dictate her visions to a scribe to write them down (the book is also notable for being the first recorded autobiography in the english language so that's neat). But yeah, I love this game and its many references, even if some of them are beyond me - it actually wound up inspiring my to finally read the Name of the Rose, and I have to say I found that a powerful experience in its own right, and it genuinely astounds me that Eco was able to write a work that is a landmark piece of postmodernist literature whilst also studiously recreating the historical setting it preoccupies itself with in the manner only a professional medievalist could, and at the same time dealing with semiotics and philosophy. I love seeing its echoes (ha) upon Pentiment and hope this game drives more people toward the former work, though the game absolutely stands up in its own right, and in fact the two are excellent companion pieces to one another.

      It seems there’s a very thin line between mysticism and heresy. Certainly, mystics often used very strong even erotic language in expressing their love for Christ. Examples include St Gertrude who had a vision of reclining near Christ and listening to the beating of His heart. St Teresa of Avila whose ecstasy was recorded as an angel pierced her soul and filled her with sweetness. This also has Biblical basis as seen in the Song of Songs recording a Bride and Groom loving each other physically. Mystics though don’t get good reputations from more inquisitorial minds as their language is very imprecise and even if their intentions may not be considered heretical, their language and expression could risk it in the minds of the inquisitors hence many were banned.

    3:30 I see the rats and the Macula as a metaphor for the unreflected destruction sociopathy can cause. The Macula (and its stages) represent the development of sociopathy in a predisposed mind that responds to experienced violence and hate during childhood by developing sociopathy as protective mechanism (as Hugo develops a stronger hate against humans during the story of the games with him literally going "nuclear" in Marsailles. The rats represent the destruction a sociopathic mind can cause if it has access to such tools (the rats being a WMD which Hugo has access to). Just recently I though that Amicia protecting Hugo to finally having to reign him in after he goes nuclear even could be a metaphor for Oppenheimer and the first nuclear bomb test, protecting the WMD until it goes off and then becoming aware of its true destructive force, like Amicia only becomes aware of Hugo's true destructive force in the last moment. Just some of the many fascinating layers the allegorical story telling of "A Plague Tale" offers with its rich use of metaphors.

    Thank you so much for your extended answer! It was very entertaining and educational. :) I always hope for an engaging conversation, but this of course always goes beyond my hopes. And it shows how important games like "A Plague Tale" are to spark such discussions and reflections reaching beyond the usual target audience for such topics. Especially "Requiem" offers a masterful allegorical story using metaphors to teach about the human condition, about how to stay compassionate and empathic in a world filled with hate and violence, and Amicia's and Hugo's struggle stand for the many that face this struggle today, as the news unfortunately show. And like the destruction the rats cause to the buildings in the cities as they swept through them in waves, today ancient structures in Palestine are destroyed under the bombardment. The more important to have the virtual worlds, that now become more realistic by the months (now with the help of Generative AI tapping into the photo archive of ancient objects and artwork), to keep the history accessible and use as a starting point for scientific discussions - like your "Is it realistic?" essays. :)

      Thank you for the question. This whole channel is partially a way for me to examine and discuss the various methods used in video games and interactive experiences to "reconstruct" the past in virtual worlds. In fact, I'm working on my own VR archaeological reconstruction project :) I have even posted my first dev log video about it on the channel. And I'm always interested in how the people who play these games see them. Is the historical accuracy something that is appreciated or is it something that can hinder the experience? Do people notice when something is historically off and does it bother them? There are a ton of questions like these I aim to explore. So I always appreciate any questions people have because I have them too. And I believe that reconstructing the past in virtual worlds will become a big thing in the near future so it would be good for people to start having these discussions now. So if you have any more questions about the historical aspects of Plague Tale or other games please ask them and I will try to answer them.

      @@LidaLiberopoulou Well, when it comes to VR worlds, historical accuracy and how it affects the experience, I think two aspects of story telling are important: Verisimilitude and the Suspension Of Disbelief. The fictional world has to setup and then follow a set of rules which the human mind can accept as its "reality", becoming believable, and thus accepting its fantastical aspects. In that fictional context it does not matter if something is accurate in regards to history or not, as long it is believable. A good example is Star Trek's Holodeck: Because it is setup as a computer program, the viewer can accept if the depicted world has inaccuracies, because it is connected to the environment not being real (btw: Trek's Holodeck is the first Generative AI shown on TV like we know today, creating worlds, characters and stories as response to a user formulating a prompt). So if your VR world for example is not 100% realistic due to being a work-in-progress, you could create a Holodeck door which leads into it. And when it has empty/"low resolution" spaces because Data is missing, you can insert replacement objects related to the VR world being a program within a Holographic environment (for example a wireframe object). If a question pops up, I post it! :)

    • @TheTuubster
      @TheTuubster 7 місяців тому

      @@LidaLiberopoulou ... the plague for example was a good way to close off areas in a level in the APT game, so the player had a reason for an area not being explorable, because it was under quarantine. So you could also setup the VR world at a moment in time which allows an explanation for missing areas or a low amount of active NPCs (as "Innocence" did in its town chapters, the plague gave a reason for the empty spaces without people/only a few soldier NPCs).

    Great video! Wow, the depth of your knowledge on both subjects is kinda amazing. Would love more content like this, not just from Fallout universe though. Comparing a fantasy version of a historic person is a wild thought experiment and helps in understanding how others interpret history or how those alternate paths could have gone (and the consequences of their actions).

    It does not surprise me at all that Edward Gibbon's "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" influenced Edward Sallow's understanding of Rome and Caesar. Have you read "The Assassination of Julius Caesar: A People's History of Ancient Rome" by Michael Parenti? The first chapter references this book and talks about Gibbon's bias

    Probably the best video about Edward Sallow I saw on Internet. Watching it made me realize, that even Courier's life is mirroring one of historical Julius Cæsar's life more closely, than Sallow's. Courier, too, comes from the Republic, they had widely travelled in their youth; they have unified lawless Mojave by eiher vanquishing it's tribes, or allying with them. Ulike FNV Cæsar, they command loyalty of their companions and respect of people they work for. So even some random mailman from the Wastes is better Cæsar, than Sallow.

  • @ProjectEkerTest33

    It's the ironic thing about Edward Sallow, he so badly wants to be Caesar but honestly he kind of acts more like the barbarian hordes that Rome regularly fought while the NCR acts more like the Roman Republic

Also, it turns out that Josh has seen Ken Russell's The Devils which is really cool!

      Thank you! As I mentioned in the video when I first tested the game the length of the dialogue was a very clear problem and i had to cut parts of it and reduce the time the lines stayed on scene. And it is possible that i might have overcorrected a bit. There are some other ways of dealing with this like adding a "Next" button to progress the conversation but that comes with its own problems. For now, i just have the option for people to go through the dialogue again after it ends. that is not the best solution either but I think I will find how to deal with this eventually.
